Since 1997 UNESCO World Heritage site, together with the Islands Palmaria, Tino, Tinetto and Cinque Terre that make up the “regional natural park of Portovenere,” Portovenere is a beautiful village located in the western part of the Gulf of La Spezia. Chosen as a place to stay and inspiration from the English poet Lord Byron, is distinguished by its architectural charm and scenic wonders including Saint Peter’s Church which stands on a plinth of rock overlooking the sea, the Castle, the Tower of the chapter, the walls. During the summer months some ferries connect with Lerici, La Spezia and Cinque Terre and operates a transport service by Baba, the nearby island of Palmaria. Portovenere is one of the seaside villages that annually take part in the Palio del Golfo; on the feast of our Lady Bianca, the whole village was covered with flowers and wreaths and lit by thousands of candeloni as the procession winds through the village. Beautiful always.
